Colored Eggs

As Easter approaches it brings back another almost forgotten memory of my first colored eggs. Dad woke me and my brother up early on Easter morning and told us that Mom needed some eggs to cook with and wanted us to go see if the chickens had laid any during the night. He gave me the egg basket while my brother lit the coal oil (kerosene) lantern and we trudged slowly out to the chicken house. The chickens were sitting on their roost and making little clucking sounds at being disturbed so early. We didn’t know much about chickens but we didn’t think they laid eggs in their sleep, we started to just shut the door and go back to the house but for some reason decided to look in the nest boxes anyway and to our great surprise we found four eggs and they were not just regular old chicken eggs either. There was a red one, a blue one, a yellow one and a green one. We grabbed them and ran back into the house to show Mom what we had found. She looked at them and said she thought they were Easter eggs. Dad came in and looked at them and said he thought they were rabbit eggs. Mom said that it didn’t matter either way she didn’t think they would be any good to cook with and that we could have them but we had to share with our younger sister and brother.
